Once when I was doing a scene in an acting class in college, the teacher stopped us in the middle, waving her arms around.

“KATIE!” she shouted, approximately four feet from me and eager to get my attention in a room she’d just silenced.

Then, dropping down to standard volume:

” . . . Do you have a speech impediment?”

(I honestly wasn’t sure. I stayed quiet to avoid possible confirmation.)

A beat, and then –

She opened an arm out wide to the class, inviting their input:

“Does anybody else hear that?”
